Before version 4.8.2, WordPress was susceptible to a Cross-Site Scripting attack in the link modal via a javascript: or data: URL.
The bug was discovered 09/19/2017. The weakness was shared 09/23/2017 by Security Team (Alex) with WordPress Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-14718 since 09/23/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11861 (WordPress Prior to 4.8.2 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 4.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
