A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in SaltStack Salt. Affected is some unknown functionality of the file /var/log/salt/minion of the component Salt-api. Salt-api in SaltStack Salt before 2015.8.13, 2016.3.x before 2016.3.5, and 2016.11.x before 2016.11.2 allows arbitrary command execution on a salt-master via Salt's ssh_client.
The bug was discovered 09/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 09/26/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at docs.saltstack.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-5200 since 01/06/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100907 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : Salt (SUSE-SU-2017:1581-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171099 (OpenSUSE Security Update for salt (openSUSE-SU-2018:1053-1)).
Upgrading to version 2015.8.13, 2016.3.5 or 2016.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
