Linux Kernel up to 2.4.28/2.6.9 vc_resize memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.28/2.6.9 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function vc_resize. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in the vc_resize function in the Linux kernel 2.4 and 2.6 before 2.6.10 allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel crash) via a short new screen value, which leads to a buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 12/15/2004. The weakness was disclosed 12/15/2004 by Georgi Guninski (Website). The advisory is shared for download at guninski.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1333 since 01/06/2005. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at guninski.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20450 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2005:219)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18523), Tenable (20450) and Exploit-DB (690). Additional details are provided at derkeiler.com. The entries 1073, 1071, 1103 and 1478 are pretty similar.
