A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft Office software when the software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110306 (Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Services and Web Apps Security Update October 2017).

Applying the patch KB3213648 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
