CPUID CPU-Z up to 1.42 Kernel-Mode Driver out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in CPUID CPU-Z up to 1.42 (Chip Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality of the component Kernel-Mode Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In CPUID CPU-Z before 1.43, there is an arbitrary memory write that results directly in elevation of privileges, because any program running on the local machine (while CPU-Z is running) can issue an ioctl 0x9C402430 call to the kernel-mode driver (e.g., cpuz141_x64.sys for version 1.41).

The bug was discovered 10/16/2017. The weakness was released 10/16/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-15303 since 10/14/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 1.43 eliminates this vulnerability.
