Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) driver in Linux kernel 2.6 does not properly check the DMA lock, which could allow remote attackers or local users to cause a denial of service (X Server crash) and possibly modify the video output.

The bug was discovered 04/22/2004. The weakness was disclosed 12/22/2004 by Rob Landley (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1056 since 11/23/2004. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

The exploit is available at secunia.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 370 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17183 (RHEL 4 : kernel (RHSA-2005:092)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org.
