A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.10 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component cmdline. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) driver in Linux kernel 2.6 does not properly check the DMA lock, which could allow remote attackers or local users to cause a denial of service (X Server crash) and possibly modify the video output.
The bug was discovered 04/22/2004. The weakness was disclosed 12/22/2004 by Rob Landley (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1056 since 11/23/2004. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
The exploit is available at secunia.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 370 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17183 (RHEL 4 : kernel (RHSA-2005:092)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115055 (Linux Kernel Multiple Vulnerabilities (RHSA-2005:092-14)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
