A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apache NiFi up to 0.7.1/1.1.1. This affects an unknown function of the component Proxy Chain Handler. The manipulation as part of a Username leads to a injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In Apache NiFi before 0.7.2 and 1.x before 1.1.2 in a cluster environment, the proxy chain serialization/deserialization is vulnerable to an injection attack where a carefully crafted username could impersonate another user and gain their permissions on a replicated request to another node.
The bug was discovered 02/20/2017. The weakness was disclosed 10/19/2017 by Andy (Website). The advisory is shared at nifi.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-5636 since 01/29/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1055 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 241 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 0.7.2 or 1.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The entry 108296 is pretty similar.
