MobileIron 4.5.4 Device Registration /mifs/c/i/reg/reg.html regpin cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in MobileIron 4.5.4. This issue affects an unknown code of the file /mifs/c/i/reg/reg.html of the component Device Registration. The manipulation of the argument regpin with the input value 12345"][script]alert('xss')[/script] leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 09/28/2013. The weakness was disclosed 10/28/2013 by Pascal Schaufelberger with scip AG as sID 10847 as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure) via scip VulDB. It is possible to read the advisory at scip.ch. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. MobileIron did not mention this issue in the release notes, because the vulnerability hasn't been classified as critical. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

This is a traditional reflected cross site scripting vulnerability, which allows the injection of arbitrary script code. An attacker might be able to alter the behavior of the web site and might therefore attack visitors.

A public exploit has been developed by Pascal Schaufelberger in HTML/Javascript and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at vuldb.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:mifs/c/i/reg/reg.html it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.

Upgrading to version 5.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling Web Server Port. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:

Cross site scripting pattern in the regpin field should be detected and eliminated. Most security solutions provide this function out of the box. (…) This issue got fixed in release 5.1.0 without further notification. Current release is 5.8, which has been available since October 2013. (…) After exchange of technical details the vendor informed that this issue was known already and has been patched without further notice.
The communication with MobileIron was very efficient and friendly.
