st Module up to 0.2.4 on Node.js /etc/passwd path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in st Module up to 0.2.4 on Node.js (JavaScript Library) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file /etc/passwd. The manipulation with the input value %2e%2e leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the st module before 0.2.5 for Node.js allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a %2e%2e (encoded dot dot) in an unspecified path.

The bug was discovered 05/13/2014. The weakness was shared 10/23/2017 by Isaac Schlueter (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-3744 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10297 (Web Server Directory Traversal Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 0.2.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
