Use of an uninitialized value in Skia in Google Chrome prior to 60.0.3112.78 for Linux, Windows, and Mac allowed a remote attacker to obtain potentially sensitive information from process memory via a crafted HTML page.
The bug was discovered 07/25/2017. The weakness was disclosed 10/27/2017 by Takeshi Terada with Ant-financial Light-Year Security Lab (Website). The advisory is shared at security.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-5103 since 01/02/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102210 (Debian DSA-3926-1 : chromium-browser - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170226 (OpenSUSE Security Update for chromium (openSUSE-SU-2017:1993-1)).
Upgrading to version 60.0.3112.78 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
