A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to XP SP2 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Integer overflow in the LoadImage API of the USER32 Lib for Microsoft Windows allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a .bmp, .cur, .ico or .ani file with a large image size field, which leads to a buffer overflow, aka the "Cursor and Icon Format Handling Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 12/23/2004. The weakness was presented 12/20/2004 by Flashsky with X-Focus (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xfocus.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1049 since 11/17/2004. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90211 (Microsoft Cursor and Icon Format Handling Remote Code Execution (MS05-002)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3079. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3209.
