Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 IPv6 ICMP Packet input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component IPv6 ICMP Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IPv6 implementation in the kernel in Apple iOS before 7 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted ICMPv6 packets.

The weakness was shared 10/22/2013 by Marc Heuse as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-3 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2391 since 06/05/2011. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70257 (Apple TV < 6.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 296021 (Oracle Solaris 10 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Third Party Bulletin - January 2018)).

Upgrading to version 10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87222) and Tenable (70257). The entries 3814, 5610, 8303 and 8559 are related to this item.
