Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 Python cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Python. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Python before 2.6.8, 2.7.x before 2.7.3, 3.x before 3.1.5, and 3.2.x before 3.2.3 computes hash values without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted input to an application that maintains a hash table.

The weakness was shared 10/22/2013 as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-3 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). The advisory is available at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

Multiple vulnerabilities existed in python 2.7.2, the most serious of which may lead to decryption of the content of a SSL connection. This update addresses the issues by updating python to version 2.7.5. Further information is available via the python site at http://www.python.org/download/releases/
This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1150 since 02/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64108 (SuSE 11.1 Security Update : apache2-mod_python (SAT Patch Number 6247)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350649 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for python26: ALAS-2012-098).

Upgrading to version 10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (64108). The entries 4807, 5572, 10946 and 10932 are related to this item.
