Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 Python resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown code of the component Python. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The XML parser (xmlparse.c) in expat before 2.1.0 computes hash values without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via an XML file with many identifiers with the same value.

The weakness was presented 10/22/2013 as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-3 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). The advisory is available at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

Multiple vulnerabilities existed in python 2.6.7, the most serious of which may lead to decryption of the content of a SSL connection. This update addresses the issues by updating python to version 2.6.8 and applying the patch for CVE-2011-4944 from the Python project. Further information is available via the python site at http://www.python.org/download/releases/
This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0876 since 01/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69696 (Amazon Linux AMI : expat (ALAS-2012-89)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350658 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for expat: ALAS-2012-089).

Upgrading to version 10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73868) and Tenable (69696). See 10946, 10932, 10931 and 10933 for similar entries.
