Cacti before 1.0.0 allows remote authenticated users to conduct PHP object injection attacks and execute arbitrary PHP code via a crafted serialized object, related to calling unserialize(stripslashes()).

The bug was discovered 01/30/2017. The weakness was disclosed 11/15/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at security.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4000 since 06/09/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 80 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350982 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for cacti: ALAS-2017-817).

Upgrading to version 1.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
