GnuTLS up to 3.2.4 DANE Library Entry memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GnuTLS (Network Encryption Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component DANE Library Entry Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the dane_query_tlsa function in the DANE library (libdane) in GnuTLS 3.1.x before 3.1.15 and 3.2.x before 3.2.5 allows remote servers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a response with more than four DANE entries.

The weakness was shared 10/24/2013 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4466 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/01/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70832 (Fedora 20 : gnutls-3.1.16-1.fc20 (2013-20662)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 3.1.15 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at gitorious.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13776.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (70832).
