PDF.js in Mozilla Firefox before 25.0 and Firefox ESR 24.x before 24.1 does not properly handle the appending of an IFRAME element, which allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files or execute arbitrary JavaScript code with chrome privileges by using this element within an embedded PDF object.
The weakness was shared 10/29/2013 by Cody Crews as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-99 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-5598 since 08/26/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70701 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (81f866ad-41a4-11e3-a4af-0025905a4771)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166313 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Mozilla Suite (openSUSE-SU-2013:1633-1)).
Upgrading to version 25.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
