strongSwan up to 5.1.0 utils/identification.c compare_dn ID_DER_ASN1_DN memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in strongSwan (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function compare_dn of the file utils/identification.c. The manipulation of the argument ID_DER_ASN1_DN with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The compare_dn function in utils/identification.c in strongSwan 4.3.3 through 5.1.1 allows (1) remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read, NULL pointer dereference, and daemon crash) or (2) remote authenticated users to impersonate arbitrary users and bypass access restrictions via a crafted ID_DER_ASN1_DN ID, related to an "insufficient length check" during identity comparison.

The weakness was shared 11/01/2013 as strongSwan Denial-of-Service Vulnerability and Potential Authorization Bypass as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at strongswan.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6075 since 10/11/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75193 (openSUSE Security Update : strongswan (openSUSE-SU-2013:1646-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166641 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Strongswan (SUSE-SU-2013:1866-1)).

Upgrading to version 5.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at strongswan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (75193). strongswan.org is providing further details. The entry 9828 is related to this item.
