The ieee802154_map_rec function in epan/dissectors/packet-ieee802154.c in the IEEE 802.15.4 dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.11 and 1.10.x before 1.10.3 uses an incorrect pointer chain, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was published 11/01/2013 as wnpa-sec-2013-61 ยท IEEE 802.15.4 dissector crash as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6336 since 10/31/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71074 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : wireshark (MDVSA-2013:279)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350398 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2014-330).
Upgrading to version 1.10.3 or 1.8.11 or higher eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
