A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.14.7 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file crypto/hmac.c of the component HMAC. The manipulation as part of a System Calls leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The software performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 11/29/2017. The weakness was disclosed 12/20/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-17806 since 12/20/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105433 (Debian DSA-4073-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context local. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237034 (Red Hat Update for kernel-alt (RHSA-2018:2948)).
Upgrading to version 4.14.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
