A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.14.8 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function check_stack_boundary
of the file kernel/bpf/verifier.c. The manipulation as part of a Variable leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The check_stack_boundary function in kernel/bpf/verifier.c in the Linux kernel through 4.14.8 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging mishandling of invalid variable stack read operations.
The bug was discovered 12/18/2017. The weakness was shared 12/27/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-17857 since 12/22/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105596 (Fedora 26 : kernel (2018-8ed5eff2c0)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277085 (Fedora Security Update for kernel (FEDORA-2018-22d5fa8a90) (Meltdown)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (105596). The entries 111054, 111055, 111056 and 111057 are related to this item.
