pdf/pdf-write.c in Artifex MuPDF before 1.12.0 mishandles certain length changes when a repair operation occurs during a clean operation, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted PDF document.

The bug was discovered 11/08/2017. The weakness was released 12/27/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at ghostscript.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-17866 since 12/23/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 49 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
