A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7/8/9/10 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block in the library icardie.dll of the component InformationCardSigninHelper. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The InformationCardSigninHelper Class ActiveX control in icardie.dll in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, and Windows RT Gold and 8.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write) via a crafted web page that is accessed by Internet Explorer, as exploited in the wild in November 2013, aka "InformationCardSigninHelper Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was presented 11/08/2013 as MS13-090 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3918 since 06/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3026 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70848 (MS13-090: Cumulative Security Update of ActiveX Kill Bits (2900986)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.
Applying the patch MS13-090 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 28493. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13323.
