Linux Kernel 3.11.6 Size Checker drivers/uio/uio.c uio_mmap_physical memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.11.6 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function uio_mmap_physical of the file drivers/uio/uio.c of the component Size Checker. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The uio_mmap_physical function in drivers/uio/uio.c in the Linux kernel before 3.12 does not validate the size of a memory block, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly gain privileges via crafted mmap operations, a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-4511.

The weakness was presented 10/29/2013 by Fabian Yamaguchi and Nico Golde as some unstracked linux kernel security fixes as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-6763 since 11/08/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71511 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2013:291)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195832 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-raring Vulnerabilities (USN-2069-1)).

Applying the patch Fix a few incorrectly checked [io_]remap_pfn_range() calls is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (71511). See 11089, 11090, 11092 and 11093 for similar entries.
