Linux Kernel 3.8.13 invirt/kvm/kvm_main.c _kvm_set_memory_region resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Affected by this issue is the function _kvm_set_memory_region of the file invirt/kvm/kvm_main.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Memory leak in the __kvm_set_memory_region function in virt/kvm/kvm_main.c in the Linux kernel before 3.9 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by leveraging certain device access to trigger movement of memory slots.

The weakness was shared 12/10/2012 by Marco Tosatti and Avi Kivity with Redhat as KVM: perform an invalid memslot step for gpa base change as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4592 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71511 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2013:291)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195829 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2066-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.9 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at kernel.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89029) and Tenable (71511). rhn.redhat.com is providing further details. The entries 11090, 11094, 11158 and 11235 are related to this item.
