Drupal up to 7.x-dev CSRF Prevention Filter code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Drupal (Content Management System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component CSRF Prevention Filter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The form API in Drupal 6.x before 6.29 and 7.x before 7.24, when used with unspecified third-party modules, performs form validation even when CSRF validation has failed, which might allow remote attackers to trigger application-specific impacts such as arbitrary code execution via application-specific vectors.

The weakness was presented 11/20/2013 by Heine Deelstra with Drupal Security Team as SA-CORE-2013-003 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at drupal.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6385 since 11/04/2013. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71145 (Drupal 7.x < 7.24 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12786 (Drupal Core Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (SA-CORE-2013-003)).

Upgrading to version 7.24 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89165) and Tenable (71145). See 11238, 11239, 11240 and 11241 for similar entries.
