GNU C Library up to 2.5 LD_LIBRARY_PATH memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in GNU C Library up to 2.5 (Software Library) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation of the argument LD_LIBRARY_PATH as part of a Environment Variable leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

A buffer overflow in glibc 2.5 (released on September 29, 2006) and can be triggered through the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable. Please note that many versions of glibc are not vulnerable to this issue if patched for CVE-2017-1000366.

The bug was discovered 12/11/2017. The weakness was published 02/01/2018 with Qualys Corporation as EDB-ID 43331 as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-1000409 since 12/05/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Qualys Corporation and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4113 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105918 (Fedora 27 : glibc (2017-828f8a8fc6)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277080 (Fedora Security Update for glibc (FEDORA-2017-828f8a8fc6)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Some versions of glibc are not vulnerable to this issue if patched for CVE-2017-1000366.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (105918) and Exploit-DB (43331). Similar entries are available at 112719 and 112777.
