A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library 2.24/2.25/2.26 on PowerPC/i386 (Software Library). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component malloc. The manipulation of the argument SIZE_MAX
as part of a Argument leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The malloc implementation in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6), from version 2.24 to 2.26 on powerpc, and only in version 2.26 on i386, did not properly handle malloc calls with arguments close to SIZE_MAX and could return a pointer to a heap region that is smaller than requested, eventually leading to heap corruption.
The bug was discovered 02/02/2018. The weakness was disclosed 02/02/2018 as Bug 22774 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-6551 since 02/02/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
