Linux Kernel up to 3.12 Gigabit Ethernet Device Support qeth_core_main.c qeth_snmp_command memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.12 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function qeth_snmp_command of the file drivers/s390/net/qeth_core_main.c of the component Gigabit Ethernet Device Support. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the qeth_snmp_command function in drivers/s390/net/qeth_core_main.c in the Linux kernel through 3.12.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via an SNMP ioctl call with a length value that is incompatible with the command-buffer size.

The weakness was shared 11/07/2013 by Fabian Yamaguchi and Nico Golde as Linux kernel CVE fixes as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-6381 since 11/04/2013. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79017 (RHEL 5 : kernel (RHSA-2014:0476)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156798 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Kernel (ELSA-2014-0285)).

Applying the patch qeth: avoid buffer overflow in snmp ioctl is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (79017). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.redhat.com. The entries 11313, 11315, 11317 and 65412 are related to this item.
