A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.12 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function recvmsg(2)/recvfrom(2)/recvmmsg(2)
of the component Socket Calls. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
** REJECT ** DO NOT USE THIS CANDIDATE NUMBER. ConsultIDs: CVE-2013-7263, CVE-2013-7264, CVE-2013-7265. Reason: This candidate is a duplicate of CVE-2013-7263, CVE-2013-7264, and CVE-2013-7265. Notes: All CVE users should reference CVE-2013-7263, CVE-2013-7264, and/or CVE-2013-7265 instead of this candidate. All references and descriptions in this candidate have been removed to prevent accidental usage.
The weakness was released 11/18/2013 as CVE Request: Linux kernel: net: uninitialised memory leakage as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-6405 since 11/04/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83665 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0068-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167544 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0068-1)).
Applying the patch inet: prevent leakage of uninitialized memory to user in recv syscalls is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (83665). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 11755, 11756, 11757 and 11758.
