Linux Kernel up to 3.12.1 kernel/ptrace.c __ptrace_may_access access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.12.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function __ptrace_may_access of the file kernel/ptrace.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

The Linux kernel before 3.12.2 does not properly use the get_dumpable function, which allows local users to bypass intended ptrace restrictions or obtain sensitive information from IA64 scratch registers via a crafted application, related to kernel/ptrace.c and arch/ia64/include/asm/processor.h.

The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was released 11/13/2013 by Vasily Kulikov as exec/ptrace: fix get_dumpable() incorrect tests as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2929 since 04/11/2013. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1441 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72535 (Oracle Linux 6 : unbreakable enterprise kernel (ELSA-2014-3011)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167699 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0481-1) - (Deprecated)).

Upgrading to version 3.4.71, 3.10.21, 3.11.10 or 3.12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (72535). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 10108, 10110, 10114 and 10998.
