Tor up to 0.2.9.14/0.3.1.9/0.3.2.9 directory-authority protocol-list Subprotocol null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Tor up to 0.2.9.14/0.3.1.9/0.3.2.9 (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component directory-authority protocol-list Subprotocol. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in Tor before 0.2.9.15, 0.3.1.x before 0.3.1.10, and 0.3.2.x before 0.3.2.10. The directory-authority protocol-list subprotocol implementation allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and directory-authority crash) via a misformatted relay descriptor that is mishandled during voting.

The bug was discovered 03/03/2018. The weakness was presented 03/05/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blog.torproject.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-0490 since 11/27/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109412 (Debian DSA-4183-1 : tor - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170913 (OpenSUSE Security Update for tor (openSUSE-SU-2018:0614-1)).

Upgrading to version 0.2.9.15, 0.3.1.10 or 0.3.2.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (109412). See 114084 for similar entry.
