Details
A vulnerability was found in Tor up to 0.2.9.14/0.3.1.9/0.3.2.9 (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component directory-authority protocol-list Subprotocol. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in Tor before 0.2.9.15, 0.3.1.x before 0.3.1.10, and 0.3.2.x before 0.3.2.10. The directory-authority protocol-list subprotocol implementation allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and directory-authority crash) via a misformatted relay descriptor that is mishandled during voting.
The bug was discovered 03/03/2018. The weakness was presented 03/05/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blog.torproject.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-0490 since 11/27/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
