hxds.dll in Microsoft Office 2007 SP3 and 2010 SP1 and SP2 does not implement the ASLR protection mechanism, which makes it easier for remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted COM component on a web site that is visited with Internet Explorer, as exploited in the wild in December 2013, aka "HXDS ASLR Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 01/30/2007. The weakness was presented 12/10/2013 as MS13-106 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-5057 since 08/06/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/03/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2506 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71321 (MS13-106: Vulnerability in a Microsoft Office Shared Component Could Allow Security Feature Bypass (2905238)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.

Applying the patch MS13-106 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
