A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Kernel. The bug was discovered 03/13/2018. The weakness was disclosed 03/13/2018 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Project Zero as confirmed security update guide (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-0901 since 12/01/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
An information disclosure vulnerability exists in the Windows kernel that could allow an attacker to retrieve information that could lead to a Kernel Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) bypass. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could retrieve the memory address of a kernel object.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108288 (KB4088786: Windows 10 March 2018 Security Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91435 (Microsoft Windows Security Update March 2018).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
