Exempi up to 2.4.3 AVI File RIFF.cpp Chunk integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Exempi up to 2.4.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Chunk of the file XMPFiles/source/FormatSupport/RIFF.cpp of the component AVI File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in Exempi before 2.4.4. Integer overflow in the Chunk class in XMPFiles/source/FormatSupport/RIFF.cpp allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via crafted XMP data in a .avi file.

The bug was discovered 08/11/2017. The weakness was published 03/15/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-18233 since 03/15/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 216 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108839 (Fedora 27 : exempi (2018-c442aad4dc)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171678 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for exempi (SUSE-SU-2018:3389-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (108839). Similar entries are available at VDB-114149, VDB-114150, VDB-114151 and VDB-114152.
