Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3.4 searchfs sizeofsearchparams integer coercion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation of the argument sizeofsearchparams with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer signedness error in the parse_machfile function in the mach-o loader (mach_loader.c) for the Darwin Kernel as used in Mac OS X 10.3.7, and other versions before 10.3.9, allows local users to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a crafted mach-o header.

The bug was discovered 04/18/2005. The weakness was published 01/20/2005 by Dave Aitel (nemo) with Immunity, Inc. (Website). The advisory is available at immunitysec.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0975 since 04/05/2005. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18062 (Mac OS X 10.3.x < 10.3.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18979), Tenable (18062), SecurityFocus (BID 12314†), OSVDB (15641†) and Secunia (SA13902†). Similar entries are available at VDB-1152, VDB-1151, VDB-1373 and VDB-1378. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
