The recalculate_apic_map function in arch/x86/kvm/lapic.c in the KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.12.5 allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host OS crash) via a crafted ICR write operation in x2apic mode.

The weakness was published 12/12/2013 by Lars Bull as fix guest-initiated crash with x2apic as not defined git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-6376 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71593 (Fedora 20 : kernel-3.12.5-302.fc20 (2013-23445)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195765 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-saucy Vulnerabilities (USN-2113-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
