IBM DB2 up to 10.5 XSLT Library denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The XSLT library in IBM DB2 and DB2 Connect 9.5 through 10.5, and the DB2 pureScale Feature 9.8 for Enterprise Server Edition, allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was presented 12/14/2013 by Danny Tsechansky with McAfee as Security Bulletin: Denial of Service Vulnerability in DB2's XSLT Library as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with IBM. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-5466 since 08/22/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71519 (IBM DB2 9.7 < Fix Pack 9 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19874 (IBM DB2 Two Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).

Applying the patch XSLT Fix Pack is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-01.ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88365) and Tenable (71519). See 6024 and 11524 for similar entries.
