The bug was discovered 03/29/2018. The weakness was published 03/29/2018 by Yuji Tounai with NTT Communications as HT208695 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-4133 since 01/02/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue. The advisory points out:

A cross-site scripting issue existed in Safari. This issue was addressed with improved URL validation.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109468 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS / 17.10 : webkit2gtk vulnerabilities (USN-3635-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context local. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197120 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Webkit2gtk Vulnerabilities (USN-3635-1)).

Upgrading to version 11.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
