A vulnerability was found in Apple iTunes up to 12.7.1 on Windows (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. iOS before 11.2 is affected. Safari before 11.0.2 is affected. iCloud before 7.2 on Windows is affected. iTunes before 12.7.2 on Windows is affected. tvOS before 11.2 is affected. watchOS before 4.2 is affected. The issue involves the "WebKit" component. It allows remote attackers to spoof user-interface information (about whether the entire content is derived from a valid TLS session) via a crafted web site that sends a 401 Unauthorized redirect.
The bug was discovered 01/11/2018. The weakness was presented 04/03/2018 by Jeonghoon Shin (OSS-Fuzz) with Theori (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at usn.ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-7153 since 03/17/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1204.001 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106594 (Fedora 26 : webkitgtk4 (2018-43712163de)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171677 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for webkit2gtk3 (SUSE-SU-2018:3387-1)).
Upgrading to version 12.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
