The xz_head function in xzlib.c in libxml2 before 2.9.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a crafted LZMA file, because the decoder functionality does not restrict memory usage to what is required for a legitimate file.
The bug was discovered 09/07/2017. The weakness was published 04/08/2018 by Gustavo Grieco (Website). The advisory is shared for download at git.gnome.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-18258 since 04/08/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 213 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. Upgrading to version 2.9.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
