Before WordPress 4.9.5, the URL validator assumed URLs with the hostname localhost were on the same host as the WordPress server.

The bug was discovered 04/03/2018. The weakness was released 04/16/2018 by Nitin Venkatesh with WordPress Security Team (Website). The advisory is available at codex.wordpress.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-10101 since 04/14/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1204.001 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
