foreman-debug before version 1.15.0 is vulnerable to a flaw in foreman-debug's logging. An attacker with access to the foreman log file would be able to view passwords, allowing them to access those systems.

The bug was discovered 12/20/2016. The weakness was published 04/16/2018 with Red Hat as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9593 since 11/23/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1552 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 428 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107053 (RHEL 7 : Satellite Server (RHSA-2018:0336)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236693 (Red Hat Update for Satellite 6.3 (RHSA-2018:0336)).

Upgrading to version 1.15.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
