In Apache Log4j 2.x before 2.8.2, when using the TCP socket server or UDP socket server to receive serialized log events from another application, a specially crafted binary payload can be sent that, when deserialized, can execute arbitrary code.

The bug was discovered 04/02/2017. The weakness was published 04/17/2018 by Marcio Almeida as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - April 2018 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-5645 since 01/29/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/28/2023).
