PostgreSQL up to 7.4.7 plpgsql code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL up to 7.4.7 (Database Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function plpgsql. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

PostgreSQL (pgsql) 7.4.x, 7.2.x, and other versions allows local users to load arbitrary shared libraries and execute code via the LOAD extension.

The bug was discovered 02/01/2005. The weakness was shared 02/01/2005 by Marc G. Fournier with postgresql.org (Website). The advisory is shared at archives.postgresql.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0227 since 02/05/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17129 (RHEL 2.1 : postgresql (RHSA-2005:150)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at wwwmaster.postgresql.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19183) and Tenable (17129). The entries 1166, 1168, 1167 and 23909 are related to this item.
