A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Ansible up to 2.1.3/2.2.0. It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Ansible before versions 2.1.4, 2.2.1 is vulnerable to an improper input validation in Ansible's handling of data sent from client systems. An attacker with control over a client system being managed by Ansible and the ability to send facts back to the Ansible server could use this flaw to execute arbitrary code on the Ansible server using the Ansible server privileges.
The bug was discovered 01/12/2017. The weakness was released 04/24/2018 as EDB-ID 41013 as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is available at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-9587 since 11/23/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Computest and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96915 (GLSA-201701-77 : Ansible: Remote execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170554 (OpenSUSE Security Update for ansible (openSUSE-SU-2017:2976-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.1.4 or 2.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96915) and Exploit-DB (41013). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 109785, 121961 and 122337.
