A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 3.2.53/3.4.72/3.10.22/3.12.3 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function pn_recvmsg
of the file net/phonet/datagram.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The weakness was presented 11/18/2013 by Brad Spengler and Tom Labanowski as Linux kernel: net: uninitialised memory leakage as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-6405 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83665 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0068-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167544 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0068-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.2.54, 3.4.73, 3.10.23 or 3.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
