Linux Kernel 3.2.53/3.4.72/3.10.22/3.12.3 net/ieee802154/dgram.c dgram_recvmsg information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 3.2.53/3.4.72/3.10.22/3.12.3 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function dgram_recvmsg of the file net/ieee802154/dgram.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The dgram_recvmsg function in net/ieee802154/dgram.c in the Linux kernel before 3.12.4 updates a certain length value without ensuring that an associated data structure has been initialized, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a (1) recvfrom, (2) recvmmsg, or (3) recvmsg system call.

The weakness was presented 11/18/2013 by Brad Spengler and Tom Labanowski as Linux kernel: net: uninitialised memory leakage as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7281 since 01/08/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71936 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2014:001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195761 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2107-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.2.54, 3.4.73, 3.10.23 or 3.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90222) and Tenable (71936). See 11755, 11756, 11757 and 11758 for similar entries.
