An issue was discovered in Joomla! Core before 3.8.8. Depending on the server configuration, PHAR files might be handled as executable PHP scripts by the webserver.

The bug was discovered 05/02/2018. The weakness was presented 05/22/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-11322 since 05/21/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1608.002 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110227 (Joomla! < 3.8.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 154015 (Joomla! Prior to 3.8.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 3.8.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
