Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Java SE 5.0u55, 6u65, and 7u45; Java SE Embedded 7u45; and OpenJDK 7 allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via vectors related to JNDI. NOTE: the previous information is from the January 2014 CPU. Oracle has not commented on third-party claims that the issue is related to missing package access checks in the Naming / JNDI component, which allows attackers to escape the sandbox.

The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0422 since 12/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72298 (Amazon Linux AMI : java-1.7.0-openjdk (ALAS-2014-280)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350462 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for java-1.6.0-openjdk: ALAS-2014-283).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13759.
